A Design Philosophy that reflects harmony through the Light and Darkness.
The design firm has arrived at an office design of their own that illustrates their design philosophy, which is about “honesty with ourselves, where every person has two sides within, light and dark.” Light and darkness are two complementary extremes that constantly play against and with each other, and they cannot exist without the other. A deeper understanding of our environment is achievable through self-understanding.
This philosophy is illustrated with some design characteristics of the designers’ office. One line separates two elements of light and darkness, which are the main environmental elements. Darkened and lighted environments are resting and working areas respectively. Noteworthy design elements include vent blocks, mural and texture paintings, special pendant lights, marble laminated table, and a big oil painting art piece.
The lighted environment has an open plan workspace where nobody has rooms or obstructed views. Colleagues can communicate with one another without obstructions or going through layers of bureaucracy. The mural wall feature that stretches from floor to ceiling has a sense of symmetry with both left and right parts of the picture being reflections of each other. Natural lighting illuminates the lighted area of the workspace.
The oil painting of a maiden on a boat that is floating on a river with greenery in the background illustrates love for natural beauty. Tropical colours on curtains and chairs complement this sense of natural beauty. A cupboard with objects of contrasting colours, materials, as well as positive and negative space aptly illustrates the designers’ design philosophy.
Although the walls and furniture are primarily dark, warm lighting lends a sense of warmth in the relaxation space. Displays of laminates and books bring colour and life to the dark landscape. Live greenery flowing from the top of the hollow bricks illustrates harmony between nature and the built environment. Task lighting draws focus on a shark, an Ironman comic, and an Ironman plaque, showcasing the designers’ love for these icons.
