With nothing more than a line separating them, the light and dark elements of this office perfectly showcase the importance of harmony in design.
When it came to its own office, Mieux Design naturally used the golden opportunity to express its philosophy of creating a design that is in complete balance and harmony with the environment to the fullest. At the same time, it wanted to achieve an atmosphere identical to that of a coworking space as well as create a setting where people could be completely honest with themselves so that it would be easier to identify their clients’ characters and requirements.
Inspiration was thus drawn from the classic Chinese philosophical concept of yin and yang which was translated into a sleek design where the main two elements are light and dark. While it is meant to encourage clients to reveal their true selves for the purpose of customising their designs, it also serves the company’s employees by offering them a dark environment fit for relaxing and a light one better suited for work. The lounge area and gallery embody this concept well with their ability to provide different experiences for different people. However, it is the double-volume mural in the office that best encapsulates the company’s approach to design with its striking resemblance to a Rorschach test.
This focus on laying bare the truth was further explored through the decision to leave most of the office’s surfaces bare in order to show the true nature of the materials involved. Aside from elements such as the cupboard doors which show off their natural wood grain, there is also the wall made out of breeze blocks which creatively provide tiny shelf spaces. The rawness of this design style was then softened with the use of carefully curated and positioned lighting such as special pendant lights so that the atmosphere remained comfortable.
HARMONISING HOMES AND HABITATS
“Art is solving problems that cannot be formulated before they have been solved. The shaping of the question is part of the answer. ”
– Piet Hein
A love for drawing and a desire to create neverbefore-seen things eventually led Sheila.C to embrace the world of interior design with great relish. She named her company Mieux Design which gets its name from the French word for ‘best’ and reflects her commitment to deliver the very same. It is therefore of no surprise that she has made a name for herself creating tailor-made designs that not only match the lifestyles and preferences of her clients but also solves any problems they might be having with their residence.
This is largely possible thanks to her philosophy of maintaining a sense of balance between her designs and the environment which she adheres to by ensuring the environment matches perfectly with what her clients want. While how this is specifically accomplished naturally varies from project to project, it always involves matching the interior with the exterior, the lighting with natural textures and even the sun’s orientation with the architecture. Additionally, she conducts mood tests that help her identify her clients’ personalities and preferences as well as the style that best suits them. The result of this detailoriented approach is specially customised designs that are unusual in nature but still fit them like a glove.
As someone who loves listening to classical music to relax as well as get inspired, Sheila.C likens interior designers to conductors as both have to successfully direct a large number of people in order to create a masterpiece. It is her hope that just as compositions like Pachelbel’s Canon have made an indelible mark on the music world, her designs will help change the local mind-set about interior design. This will in turn allow her to explore and introduce new concepts to the local market.
